Application/Audition Requirements

Applications Due: January 15, 2020.

Instrumentation

Music for All is accepting applications for the BOA Honor Band on the following instruments:

  • Flute and Piccolo
  • Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
  • Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Mellophone
  • Baritone
  • Trombone/Bass Trombone
  • Tuba
  • Percussion: Snare, Tenors, Bass and Cymbals
  • Auxiliary: Flag, Dancer
  • Vocal Quartet: SATB voicing

Drum majors for the band will be selected from among selected instrumental and auxiliary band members. Drum Major audition information will be available to selected band members. Students are required to audition and be selected as an instrumentalist or auxiliary member in order to be eligible to audition as drum major. Students are expected to participate as an instrumentalist or auxiliary member should they not be selected as a drum major.

 

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must have graduation years of 2020 or later. (Class of 2020 seniors are eligible.)

NOTE: the parade route is 5.5 miles long. Applicants should be of health and stamina to be able to complete the route with ease.

 

Member Cost

Total Member Package Cost: $2,379* (*Based on Quad occupancy. Upgrades to triple or double rooms are permitted. No single rooms will be permitted). 

Payment Due Dates

$250 deposit to secure your spot before Feb. 14, 2020.
$365.80 due by March 5, 2020.

$365.80 due by July 10, 2020.
$365.80 due by Sept. 4, 2020.
$365.80 due by Oct. 2, 2020.

All payments are non-refundable.

 

How to Apply

All applications and audition recordings will be online via Acceptd, the world’s largest arts network (getacceptd.com). To apply, complete the online application form and upload your audition recording according to the requirements on the website. There will be a $45 application fee, to be paid online prior to submission of your application.

Applicatons will be evaluated, and students accepted by rolling admission. Once accepted into the ensemble, you will receieve notification via a letter mailed USPS to your home address listed on your application, and an email sent to the primary email listed on your application. Please make sure that you allow emails from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and list an email you check often.

 

Audition Guidelines

  • Since this is the only chance for the student to be heard, the quality of the recording should be of utmost consideration. The quality of your recording will affect the evaluators’ ability to review and comment. A high quality audio and video recording is expected.
  • State your name, age, school you attend, and years of musical experience at the beninning of your audition recording. 
  • Review your recording(s) before you submit to check the sound level and ensure the best audio quality.
  • Only uneditied recordings can be accepted, and should be in high fidelity stereo.
  • Be aware of the acoustic environment in which you record. Background noise and poor sound quality make your recording difficult to evaluate.

 

Winds Audition Requirements

Audition requirements for winds will include: three one octave major scales, one octave chromatic scale and excerpts from “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, below for your use.

 

Percussion Audition Requirements

*Note: All rudiments must be performed slow-fast-slow

Snare : Traditional grip ONLY

  • Double stroke roll

Triplet roll exercise (one that you know)
  • Rudimental Snare drum solo (maximum 2 minutes)

Tenors : Quads or Quints/rudiments performed on drum #2

Bass Drum : Please perform on the size you would prefer to play, if selected.

  • Paradiddle-diddle

  • Triplet roll exercise (one that you know)

Cymbals: Students should show a prepared excerpt from a cymbal technique exercise or music that you have performed.

Students should also show the following crash styles:

  • Crash
  • 
Choke

  • Scrape
  • Slide choke
  • 
Any visual or technique of your choice

 

Color Guard Requirements

Each individual who would like to participate in the Bands of America Honor Band Color Guard should display the following attributes:

  • Desire
  • Confidence
  • Projection
  • Excellence
  • Artistry
  • Technical Fluency

Each applicant must display the following skills:

  • 32 counts of Drop Spins at tempo 120

  • 32 counts of Over Hand or Speed Spins
  • Flag Tosses (including, but not limited to, 45 degree, parallel, and 4 count tosses)

In addition, each applicant must 
submit a 1 to 2 minute choreographed flag presentation. The equipment vocabulary for the presentation should be an advanced level flag routine and may be work that you have performed with your marching band or winter guard program. If possible, have a soundtrack to your audition so the adjudicators can evaluate your musicality and performance abilities. The adjudication panel will be focusing on not only your ability to handle the equipment but also your ability to incorporate upper body control as well as movement in the lower body.

Each applicant will also need to submit 
a 32 count movement excerpt in which they should display an advanced level of ballet
or modern dance technique. If possible,
 have a soundtrack to your audition so the adjudicators can evaluate your musicality and performance abilities.

 

Dance Requirements

Dance Solo:

Dance Solo: This can be a routine that you plan on using during the spring competition season. Costuming your solo performance is optional
.

  • Routine Length should be 1:30-2:00 minutes
  • Type of Dance Movements that need to be incorporated: Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical and Modern

  • Please include the following: Double or triple pirouette turn outside or inside, right or left pique turns, chaine turns right or left, arabesque sauté, grand jete, battement (R or L leg extension), attitude turn, control section, series of leaps and turns, floor section, layout and R or L split, traveling section, use of upper body expressively throughout the performance.

Each individual who would like to participate in the Bands of America Honor Band Dance Line should display the following attributes:

  • 
Appearance: Professionalism, Poise, Appropriateness of Musical Selection

  • Choreography: Originality/Creativity, Variety of Movement, Musicality, Difficulty
  • Technique: Method/Completion of Movement, Articulation/Strength of Movement, Posture/Alignment
  • Presentation/Staging: Use of performance area
  • 
Showmanship: Emotion, Projection/Style

 

Vocal Quartet Requirements

We are looking for one soprano, one alto, one tenor and one bass.
Each applicant should perform a minimum of three (solo) works of contrasting styles, with one being a musical theater selection. Selections should showcase the performer's technical and lyrical vocal skills.

Minimum performance time 10 minutes. Maximum performance time 20 minutes.
