What is your hometown?
Richmond, VA

Where did you go to high school? Where did you go to college and when did you/will you graduate?
I attended Mills E. Godwin High School then went on to graduate from The University of Kansas in 2019.

What is your musical background?
I have a fairly large pool of experience ranging from guitar playing to a barbershop quartet in high school. I was on the KU drumline for three years and during that time I also played drum set in the pep band. I have played in various bands since high school and love to write and record my own music.

What are you most looking forward to with your internship experience?
I love traveling to competitions and represent Music for All via social media. Helping create positively life changing experiences is a fun and rewarding experience!

I had brain surgery when I was seven.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Muse, and Rage Against the Machine

Would you rather have perfect pitch or be able to sight read perfectly?
Sight read perfectly. I’d love to have perfect pitch but perfect sight reading seems much more practical.

Working as a Product Designer in a dog-friendly office.

If you could switch sections in your marching band, which section would you join?
Trombone, it’s my favorite brass instrument.

I went to Clinton Central Jr./Sr. High School. I am currently a Senior at IUPUI, where I am studying Event Management. I will graduate in May 2020.

What is your musical background?
I was in band from 5th grade until I graduated high school, where I played percussion. I participated in concert band, pep band, and jazz band.

What are you most looking forward to with your internship experience?
I am most excited to go to the events and see how everything is done and see all of the different departments come together to create an awesome experience for the bands!

What is an interesting fact about you?
I’ve gone zip lining through the jungles in Jamaica.

Who are your top three favorite artists?

Would you rather have perfect pitch or be able to sight read perfectly?
I would definitely want to sight read perfectly!

What is your dream job?
My dream job is to start my own concert promotion business.

If you could switch sections in your marching band, which section would you join?
I always wanted to play the trumpet if I wasn’t a percussionist, so I would want to join the brass section in marching band.

I haven’t watched anything recently, but I am hoping to start Brooklyn Nine-Nine soon.

My family is my biggest role model, because they are always encouraging me to do what ever makes me happy.

Started band in 6th grade and never stopped. I have been in an unhealthy number of ensembles since then and I loved every minute of it.

What are you most looking forward to with your internship experience?
I am most looking forward to traveling with my co-workers and creating memories while providing a positively life changing experience for students around the country.

I once put a small dollhouse in a little tub with water for my goldfish so it could live in style, but it got stuck between the counter and fridge and suffocated.

What is your musical background?
I played violin since 5th grade until my senior year in high school. I played in my high school’s orchestra all four years, and I have always had a deep love and appreciation for classical music and orchestral pieces.

What has been your favorite part of this internship experience?
Being able to work with the students, parents, and guests at each event. Often I don’t get to directly see the fruit of my labors in other workplaces, so having the chance to directly interact with and help make those we serve happy and having a positive impact on their experience has meant the world to me.

What is an interesting fact about you?
I am a certified 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and I recently traveled abroad in Poland.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
In no particular order: Zach Hemsey, Powerwolf, and Mick Gordon

Would you rather be able to talk to animals or speak all the foreign languages?
Since I’ve been abroad and often served others from different countries, I’d like to be able to speak all languages to have that connection with everyone I meet.

What division at camp would you want to participate in if you were still in school?
Leadership Weekend

What are you currently reading?
It’s one of my favorite pastimes, but I haven’t had much time to really sit down and read anything recently.

The last thing I watched was the finale of Game of Thrones and One Punch Man Season 2.

Since sixth grade, I’ve bounced back and forth between trumpet and bassoon depending on the needs of my ensembles at the time. In high school, I did marching band, wind ensemble, jazz, and orchestra, and in college I’ve continued on with wind ensemble and orchestra. I’ve done chamber ensembles and a few musicals as well.

I love having a wide variety of projects and the fun, passionate people with whom I get to work on them. I love being able to support educators.

I was a member of the Carmel Guard program for 7 years! I feel very lucky to have been a staff member for the Carmel JV Guard since I graduated and have gotten to teach students at Elwood Jr./Sr. High School and Noblesville High School.

What has been your favorite part of this internship experience?
I love getting to interact with directors, and I love getting to watch students benefit from some of the same great experiences Music for All provided me with when I was a student.

I have a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy

I have played flute for 11 years. In high school, I was a section leader in the marching band and a member of the wind ensemble. I participated in various musicals, flute choirs, and ILMEA District/All-State.

What has been your favorite part of this internship experience?
My favorite part about being a Music for All intern is being able to see the impact that music has on students, directors, and staff members from the perspective of a former participant to now an intern.

What is an interesting fact about you?
I studied abroad in Dubai and toured 8 different companies in 7 days; every dog that I’ve had has been named after construction trucks.

Music for All Intern Spotlight: Sarah Keck

What is your hometown? Altamont, MO

Where did you go to high school? Where did you go to college and when did you/will you graduate?
South Harrison High School in Bethany, MO; graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in May 2017

What is your major/degree?
Music Education

What is your musical background? This could be instruments you play and involvement in musical activities such as choir, DCI, theatre, winter guard, etc. 
I grew up in a musical family with my mother as a guard instructor, and father and sister as band directors. Choir and band were a large part of my life during high school. I went on to study instrumental music education in Kansas City with my main instrument being tuba. College gave me an opportunity to play in chamber groups and solo competitions, as well as perform in the wind bands. I loved the variety of teaching experiences I received in the metro area as I worked with musicians ranging from young children to senior citizens learning how to play an instrument for the first time. During the summers, I got to be a member of the SWAG Team at the Music for All Summer Symposium for four years. 

What are you most looking forward to in your internship this spring?
I am looking forward to learning strategies that I can take back and implement in my community to create events that help facilitate more positively life-changing experiences through music education. 

What is an interesting fact about you?
I am learning to speak Italian with my roommate and fellow intern, Tori.

Music for All Intern Spotlight: Tori Bingham

Tulsa, Oklahoma 

Where did you go to high school? Where did you go to college and when did you/will you graduate?
Bixby High School in Bixby, Oklahoma. University of Arkansas, graduated Spring 2017 

What is your major/degree?
Bachelors in Music Education

What is your musical background? This could be instruments you play and involvement in musical activities such as choir, DCI, theatre, winter guard, etc. 
My main instrument is oboe, and I played in the UofA Wind Ensemble, University Symphony Orchestra, and chamber ensembles. I played flute with the Pride of Bixby, and saxophone in the Razorback Marching Band at the University of Arkansas. Last summer, I got the opportunity to travel to Schladming, Austria and perform with the World Youth Wind Orchestra Project! 

What are you most looking forward to in your internship this spring?
I’m looking forward to growing more with Music for All. Having spent four years as part of the SWAG Team at Summer Symposium, I am excited about learning a new aspect of the organization. This fall, I’m looking forward to working with so many incredible people to provide “positively life-changing experiences” for so many students! 

What is an interesting fact about you?
I hope to be the proud mother of a beautiful, fluffy Pomeranian one-day.

Name/Job Title: Debbie Laferty Asbill/Vice President of Marketing and Communications

Hometown: I grew up in the Air Force, so no hometown, but I did go to high school and college in Morehead, Kentucky (Rowan County High School and Morehead State University).

How long have you been with Music for All?
Since 1985, started as Promotions Coordinator with Bands of America.

What is your favorite event at Music for All and why?
All :)

What has been your favorite part of working at Music for All?
I’ve been able to combine the passion of my youth with a career; that, and the great people I get to meet and the friendships both inside the office and outside. 

Do you have a favorite memory of working an event with Music for All?
There are many, but being at the first Bands of America Honor Band experience in the 2005 Tournament of Roses Parade stands out in particular, seeing and hearing the band turn the famous “TV corner.”

What is your musical background?
Played flute in school and drum major in high school, music minor for a short time in college (flag in Morehead State University marching band and ’84 Garfield Cadets). Learning lately to play ukulele. Now, I’m a band mom of an incoming 6th grade bassoon player. I grew up in a musical family: my mom plays piano and sings, my dad played guitar, and both of my brothers are kick-butt guitar players that regularly gig in and around Chicago and beyond.

One thing you couldn’t live without?
Oxygen.

What kind of music do you listen to?
Some of my favorites are Kirtan artists (Nirinjan Kaur, Jai Uttal, Ben Leinbach, Sean Johnson, and the Wild Lotus Band), Bach, Stravinsky, John Adams, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead.

What do you like to do in your free time?
Yoga, hike, meditate, boulder (mostly inside lately), reading.

What are you currently reading?
Just finished “The Push: A Climber's Journey of Endurance, Risk, and Going Beyond Limits” by Tommy Caldwell and just started “The Other Shore” by Thich Nhat Hanh.

What's a show you've binge watched recently?
I binged watched Game of Thrones recently again to catch new things before Season 7; now watching The Americans on Amazon Prime.

Favorite movie not many people have seen?
Meru. I am obsessed with documentaries about big wall/big Alpine climbing.
