Application/Audition Requirements

Audition Guidelines

  • Since this is the only chance for the student to be heard, the quality of the recording should be of utmost consideration. The quality of your recording will affect the evaluators’ ability to review and comment. A high quality audio and video recording is expected.
  • Review your recording(s) before you submit to check the sound level and ensure the best audio quality.
  • Be aware of the acoustic environment in which you record. Background noise and poor sound quality make your recording difficult to evaluate
  • Only unedited recordings can be accepted, and should be in high fidelity stereo.
  • State your name, age, school you attend, and years of experience at the beginning of your audition recording.
  • Print out the Director Recommendation Form. This form must be returned to Music for All, received no later than January 15, 2016. Mail to: Music for All, 39 W. Winds Audition Requirements

Audition requirements for winds will include: three one octave major scales, one octave chromatic scale and excerpts from “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.

Percussion Audition Requirements

*Note: All rudiments must be performed slow-fast-slow

Snare (Traditional grip ONLY)

  • Double stroke roll

Cymbals

Students should show a prepared excerpt from a cymbal technique exercise or music that you have performed. Students should also show the following crash styles:

  • Crash 
Choke

  • Scrape
  • Slide choke
  • 
Any visual or technique of your choice

Color Guard Requirements

Each individual who would like to participate in the Bands of America Honor Band Color Guard must display the following attributes:

  • Desire
  • Teamwork
  • Enthusiasm
  • Performance
  • Ability
  • Experience

Each applicant must display the following skills:

  • 32 counts of Drop Spins at tempo 120

  • 32 counts of Over Hand or Speed Spins
  • Flag Tosses (including, but not limited to, 45 degree, parallel, and 4 count tosses)

In addition, each applicant must 
submit a 1 to 2 minute choreographed flag presentation. The equipment vocabulary for the presentation should be an advanced level flag routine and may be work that you have performed with your marching band or winter guard program. If possible, have a soundtrack to your audition so the adjudicators can evaluate your musicality and performance abilities. The adjudication panel will be focusing on not only your ability to handle the equipment but also your ability to incorporate upper body control as well as movement in the lower body.

Each applicant will also need to submit 
a 32 count movement excerpt in which they should display an advanced level of ballet
or modern dance technique. If possible,
 have a soundtrack to your audition so the adjudicators can evaluate your musicality and performance abilities.

Dance Requirements

Dance Solo:

Dance Solo: This can be a routine that you plan on using during the spring competition season. Costuming your solo performance is optional
.

  • Routine Length should be 1:30-2:00 minutes
  • Type of Dance Movements that need to be incorporated: Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet/
  • Lyrical and Modern

  • Please include the following: Double or triple pirouette turn outside or inside, right or left pique turns, chaine turns right or left, arabesque sauté, grand jete, battement (R or L leg extension), attitude turn, control section, series of leaps and turns, floor section, layout and R or L split, traveling section, use of upper body expressively throughout the performance.

Scoring Guidelines:

  • 
Appearance: Grooming, Appropriateness of Musical Selection – 10 pts.

  • Choreography: Originality/Creativity, Variety of Movement, Musicality, Difficulty – 25 pts.

  • Technique: Method/Completion of Movement, Articulation/Strength of Movement, Posture/Alignment – 25 pts.
  • Presentation/Staging: Use of performance area – 20 pts.
  • 
Showmanship: Emotion, Projection/Style – 20 pts.

Instrumentation

Music for All is accepting applications for the BOA Honor Band on the following instruments:

  • Piccolo
  • Flute
  • Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
  • Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Mellophone
  • Baritone
  • Trombone/Bass Trombone
  • Tuba
  • Percussion: Snare, Tenors, Bass and Cymbals
  • Auxiliary: Flag, Dancer

Drum majors for the band will be selected from among selected instrumental and auxiliary band members. Drum Major audition information will be available to selected band members. Students are required to audition and be selected as an instrumentalist or auxiliary member in order to be eligible to audition as drum major. Students are expected to participate as an instrumentalist or auxiliary member should they not be selected as a drum major.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must have graduation years of 2016 or later. (Class of 2016 seniors are eligible.)

NOTE: the parade route is 5.5 miles long. Applicants should be of health and stamina to be able to complete the route with ease.
