Music for All releases groundbreaking report: Within Our Power: The Progress, Plight and Promise of Arts Education for Every Child
On September 18, 2007, New Jersey Secretary of State, Nina Mitchell Wells, and Commissioner of Education, Lucille E. Davy, along with the project partners for the New Jersey Arts Education Census Project, participated in the release of the report WITHIN OUR POWER: The Progress, Plight and Promise of Arts Education for Every Child.
The report was announced via webcast and before a live studio audience at New Jersey Network Studios in Trenton.
The Report includes the highlights, findings and recommendations from the New Jersey Arts Education Census Project.
Within Our Power is the result of collaboration between the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, the New Jersey Department of Education, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, and Music for All.
Additional support was provided by NAMM - International Music Products Association, the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts and David Bryan of Bon Jovi.
"The big headlines are first, the need for better accountability for arts education.
Great policies with no accountability means far too many students do not have access to a quality education that includes the arts, and access and equity is what this is ultimately about.
Secondly, socioeconomic status is not a factor.
There are great arts programs across all economic categories in New Jersey," stated Bob Morrison, Music for All Executive Vice President and the director of the project.
The Census Project is being hailed as a model for how other states and communities may measure the status and condition of arts education.

San Diego's Colortone To Be Featured at Garage Bands America
The band Colortone will play at Garage Bands America, Fri. night, Nov. 16 in Indianapolis.
Colortone's music is an eclectic blend of rock, alternative, blues, reggae, funk and hip-hop.
The former classmates started the band while in high school.
Now they're spread out: Tolan Shaw, 18, going to University of San Diego; Robin Park, 19, to Northern Arizona University and Eric Christensen,18, to UC Santa Cruz.
The coolest part is Colortone's path to MFA.
"I found out about Music for All when I picked up an MFA Awareness bracelet at the Guitar Center in San Marcos, California," says Robin.
"After reading the packaging, I became more interested and went to your web site and found exactly what we wanted."
What they wanted was a charity to donate proceeds from their first CD, Destiny Unknown.
They not only donated all proceeds after cost to support Music for All, but set up donation tables at performances as well.
"Colortone's message - Music's for the people: love to play, play to love," says Tolan.
"Music is an expression that all can embrace, interpret and feel, one that will never die and will constantly be created and twisted to signify the artists emotions.
It is our joy and sanctuary in life."
Listen to a Colortone track
Wanna Play? We're still looking for a few great bands to play at the 2007 Garage Bands America show, Friday, Nov. 16 on Pan Am Plaza in Indianapolis, part of the Grand National Championships' Celebrate America.
