In a Garage Band? Here's How YOU Can Perform at Grand Nationals
Last year, Music for All debuted the Garage Band America show as part of Celebrate America! at Grand Nationals. Now, we're calling for garage bands of all styles to send an audition tape for the 2007 Garage Band America show, Friday, Nov. 16 on Pan Am Plaza in Indianapolis. Selected bands get a concert experience - professional stage, lighting, video screen and sound system. More than 4,000 are expected to attend the outdoor Celebrate America festival, which includes live fireworks display. Be a part of the Grand Nationals music celebration.

Wilco's Glenn Kotche Talks to Music for All about his BOA Experiences
Did you know that Wilco has BOA ties? Heralded by The Chicago Tribune for his "unfailing taste, technique and discipline," Chicago-based percussionist and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche's exploration of rhythm and space began in childhood in Roselle, Illinois, where he was a member of the Lake Park High School band and participated in BOA Championships. Glenn also helped as a teaching assistant in the late 90s at BOA's World Percussion Symposium. He's featured on the cover of the August issue of Modern Drummer. Last month, Music for All's Beth Doctor and Laura Peters sat down with him prior to Wilco's Indianapolis show to talk about BOA and music education.

David Starnes to Serve as an Educational Consultant for Music for All
David Starnes has been named an Educational Consultant for Music for All. Starnes is the Director of Bands at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Kennesaw, GA and he will continue to lead the Kennesaw program as he assumes the role of an Educational Consultant. David joined Kennesaw Mountain's music faculty in 2000 when the school opened, and the band program has since grown to over 300 members and is recognized in all areas of performance on national, state and local levels.
As an Educational Consultant, Starnes will assist in coordination and will provide valuable input into Music for All's educational programs and offerings. David's duties will include many of those of Music for All's former Educational Director, Dean Westman, who recently assumed a position as the Director or Orchestras at Avon (IN) High School and continues to support Music for All as the Coordinator of the orchestral portion of the Music for All National Festival.
"I am really excited to be on board with Music For All as an Educational Consultant. I know what this organization has done for our program, but I truly saw what Bands of America does for kids nationwide, when I was the percussion coordinator for the Honor Band of America that performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2005...what an experience! I believe in the mission and the long-term effect that it has on band programs, students and parents. It was the seed that grew our program."
Documentary "From The 50 Yard Line" to Premiere at Rhode Island Film Festival
The World Premiere of "From The 50 Yard Line" will take place at the Rhode Island Film Festival on August 8, 2007. The film follows the well-known Centerville Jazz Band from band camp, to practice and finally, to the 2006 Grand National Championships.
The documentary also follows the Fairfax High School Band, that was just recently reinstated after 18 years of silence due to lack of funding. The film shows the similarities and differences between these two bands. The documentary showcases the power of music and the impact of band.

Making Music Helps Make the Grade
Students in high-quality school music education programs score higher on standardized tests compared to students in schools with deficient music education programs, according to a study published in last week's issue of the Journal for Research in Music Education. This is the first study ever to examine the quality of school music programs as a factor affecting test scores, independent of the socioeconomic level of the school or school district.
The study comprised 4,739 elementary and middle school students in four U.S. regions and revealed a strong relationship between elementary (third or fourth grade) and middle school (eighth or ninth grade) students' academic achievement and their participation in school music programs that differed based on quality.
The study was funded by the NAMM Foundation under its "Sounds of Learning" initiative.

Louisiana Adds Music/Arts Mandate - Massachusetts goes the other way
Governor Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana just signed into law Act 175 mandating the visual and performing arts for all schools. Full implementation of the law is scheduled for the 2010/2011 school year and will require all students to have music and the arts as a part of their basic education. The Louisiana law was largely based on the Arkansas legislation that mandated music and art instruction for all children starting with the 2005/2006 school year. Louisiana is now the first state to replicate the Arkansas legislation. Music for All worked closely with Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee along with music and arts advocates to pass the model legislation.
In Massachusetts, arts advocates are pushing the state Department of Education to make arts education a bigger part of recommended high school graduation requirements, which list music, art and related subjects as electives. The recommendations, which the state Board of Education plans to vote on this fall, include four credits each of English and math, three credits each of history and a lab-based science, two credits in the same foreign language and six credits in a chosen elective. Electives may include visual and performing arts, career and technical education, technology or additional courses in other academic subjects. Advocates would like to see students required to take at least one credit of art.
