Groundbreaking Report:
Within Our Power

No Child Left Behind

With the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind being pushed into next year, it is likely the law will not be revised until 2009. An issue as heated as this will more than likely not be able to be addressed during an election year.

In January, Music for All will add a No Child Left Behind section to our website to keep everyone informed on the latest news as well as the best strategies for dealing with the law in your school.

Connections That Last a Lifetime

Marian Reunion If you have been involved with Music for All and Bands of America as a participant, parent or volunteer, the impact is felt long after the final notes are performed! The music teachers who lead their students through Music for All programs each year have their own histories with BOA. Directors at four of the 2007 Grand National Finalist Bands have a personal history with one of those programs - each as a teacher or graduate of the Marian Catholic H.S. (IL) music program.

Pictured above (from left to right) on the field after the Grand National Finals award ceremony are:
  • Josh Torres, Marian Catholic 1999 graduate - Now percussion specialist at Center Grove H.S., IN. Josh was also a recipient of The Revelli Scholarship as a senior in high school, which is awarded to future music educators.
  • Greg Bimm, Director of Bands with Marian Catholic from 1977 to present.
  • Kevin McNulty Jr., Marian Catholic 1998 graduate - Now Assistant Band Director at Richland H.S., TX.
  • Marc Whitlock, Associate Director at Marian Catholic from 1992 to 2001 - Now Director of Bands at Plymouth Canton Ed. Park, MI 2003 to present.

Conversations Overheard on the Campaign Trail

More and more the issue of music and arts education is showing up on the campaign trail. Here are some of the most recent comments:

"To remain competitive in the global economy, America needs to reinvigorate the kind of creativity and innovation that has made this country great. To do so, we must nourish our children's creative skills. In addition to giving our children the science and math skills they need to compete in the new global context, we should also encourage the ability to think creatively that comes from a meaningful arts education."

- Barak Obama

"I would have art in the schools as a way to stimulate kids being stronger in science and math proficiency."

- Gov. Bill Richardson, Dec 13 - Des Moines Register Debate

"I would unleash weapons of mass instruction. I'm a passionate, ardent supporter of having music and art in every school for every student at every grade level. Because let's just make sure you understand why. It's not frivolous. It's because if we don't develop the right side of the brain with the same level of attention as we do the left, which is the logical side, we end up with an unbalanced, bored student, which is exactly what we've done, and students are out of our system because of it."

- Gov. Mike Huckabee, Dec 12 - Des Moines Register Debate
