Testimonials from Participating Band Directors

Fall Preview Experiences

In 2006, BOA premiered the Fall Preview Experiences. These early season, exhibition/evaluation events afforded bands the opportunity to perform at BOA events and receive an immediate clinic/evaluation experience from one of our BOA evaluators. Building on the success of the Fall Preview Experiences in 2006, BOA will offer three Fall Preview Experiences in Tulsa, OK; Fort Mill, SC and Austin, TX.

The highlights of these events include:
  1. Performance and a taped evaluation from four BOA judges.
  2. Immediate oral evaluation/clinic experience with one of the panelists.
  3. The opportunity to participate in a family community picnic/dinner on site.
  4. A 30-minute group Motivational Session lead by a Summer Symposium Leadership Experience Faculty member.
  5. The opportunity for an optional post performance clinic/evaluation/input session with the Fall Preview evaluation panel using the performance video as a resource.

What are Fall Preview Experiences?

The Fall Preview Experience is a unique early season performance opportunity offered in a non-competitive atmosphere, providing critical early season input, cooperative encouragement and mutual respect among band programs. It's a special opportunity designed for new programs, programs new to BOA, and for regular participants alike. It's a "get your feet wet," early season performance opportunity, combined with team building and leadership elements, and useful early season input from a BOA-caliber evaluation team of experts, without the pressures of competition, scores and ratings.

How are Fall Preview Experiences different from Regional Championships?

In one phrase - stress free! No one can deny the stress that any director feels as he or she takes the band "out" for that early performance. Rankings and ratings can add to that anxiety. In keeping with BOA's mission to create and provide positively life-changing experiences through music, Fall Preview Experiences are designed to provide all the benefits of performance without the stress of competition. Participants will receive input from four BOA evaluators in the areas of Music Ensemble, Visual Ensemble, and Music and Visual General Effect. Bands will receive both written and taped commentary, but no scores or ratings, from a panel comprised of regular BOA judges. Understanding that very few bands have complete shows in early season, there will be no minimum performance time. This is a chance to perform as much or as little of your program as you desire. Each band will perform just once. As with BOA Regionals, performance times will be placed in a random draw for a morning/afternoon show and a night show. The night show will also serve as an extended educational opportunity for performers in the morning/afternoon show experience. First priority for the night show will be given to any 2006 BOA Regional Finalist, Grand National Semi-Finalist or Class Champion. Tickets purchased by parents and supporters will be good for the entire day. Participating students will be admitted free of charge all day.

Immediately following the performance, one of four evaluators will accompany the band to provide an immediate 6-8 minute Post Performance Recap. That evaluator will focus and place an emphasis on the positives and what will be required to ensure ultimate success during the fall. Each evaluator will be uniquely qualified to speak to performers and teachers alike to critique and encourage.

Fall Preview Experiences will be held at exceptional high school stadiums and facilities that provide the convenience and amenities necessary for a successful event. There will be no awards ceremony for the event. However, students will receive individual certificates of participation from rosters provided by participating bands.

Community Picnic/Dinner and Student Motivational Session

In an effort to build early season camaraderie within individual programs as well as making some new friends, BOA will also offer a "community picnic/dinner" for all to attend during the dinner hour. The picnic includes a meal, music and more! The picnic is the perfect opportunity for band staff, students and parents to celebrate the start of a great fall season. Picnic tickets will be a separate, additional charge and may vary from site to site.

Following the picnic, BOA will present a Student Motivational Session that is guaranteed to energize and motivate students, teachers and parents alike! Lead by Summer Symposium Leadership Preview Weekend staff, the Motivational Session will be designed to support the teamwork, personal leadership and the commitment necessary for any band to ensure a successful fall season.

In-Depth Clinic and Input Offered

There will be an optional educational opportunity available for directors, instructional staff and designers. For an additional fee of $350, you can schedule a one-hour (30 minutes visual and 30 minutes music) clinic with our Fall Preview Experience evaluators. This is an opportunity to analyze the performance video from Saturday in a positive and constructive atmosphere. The clinic opportunities will be offered and scheduled on a first come, first served basis on the next day (Sunday) after your performance. Clinic times will run on the hour, beginning at 8 a.m. The clinic schedule will accommodate a maximum of 14 time slots. Nowhere else can directors have the direct and valuable input of BOA judges/evaluators on their program and band's performance. It's an opportunity you won't want to miss.

Participation Requirements and Similarities

As a BOA event, each participating band will have administrative requirements and obligations. Notably, each band will be required to provide:

Enrollment Application

A new and separate application must be completed for Fall Preview Experience applicants. Enrollment is complete once you have submitted an application form, signed by the band director and school principal, and the Participation Fee. See below and the Fall Preview Experience Application Form for specifics on the Participation Fee.

Copyright Documentation

As a leader in the music education activity, Bands of America takes care to comply with copyright laws. We have heard some say, “BOA’s requirements are too much.” BOA has no copyright requirements. BOA only insists that its participants show us evidence that they have complied with the law by providing written permission from copyright owners to perform musical arrangements. By doing so, we can also meet our own requirements for compliance.

Almost to the very last copyright owner, that permission says an arrangement cannot be duplicated or recorded in any form by the user, without further permission from the copyright owner. Under the copyright laws, the venue where a performance is held is responsible for, and liable for, any copyright violation in its facility. Venues, in turn, pass those obligations on to Bands of America. What this means is that almost all stadiums require BOA to guarantee that all copyright laws are in compliance. BOA is held accountable.

All bands enrolled in Bands of America Championship events are required to provide written permission from copyright holders for special arrangements. BOA, in turn, secures the necessary live performance rights. In the case of Fall Preview Experiences, only one high camera educational/teaching video will be made. That recording will be provided to the participating director as a teaching tool/archive. No additional recordings or duplications of the performance will be permitted or allowed.

Event Rules and Procedure

The BOA Adjudication rules will be generally applicable, except that no scores or rating will be used. However, BOA’s criteria reference adjudication system will be the basis for written and taped evaluations. In addition, while the four-minute pre-set and two-minute exit rules will not be strictly enforced, the Fall Preview Show will run on 15-minute time blocks as per any other BOA event. Other important procedures including warm-up restrictions, maximum show length, use of props and electronics, etc. will remain in place and apply.

Reduced Participation Pricing

The Fall Preview Experience Participation Fee will be $600.. A Deposit Option will allow participants to deposit $300 to hold a performance spot with the remaining balance due no later than May 12. (The participation fee for a BOA Regional, Super Regional or Grand Nationals is $800.) An additional, separate $350 fee is required for the hour-long post event clinic.

The $600 Participation Fee includes:
  1. Performance Opportunity

  3. 6-8 minute Post Performance Recap
  4. Student Motivational Session
  5. Student access to stadium all day

The Participation Fee DOES NOT INCLUDE the costs of admission/participation in the Community Picnic/Dinner or any additional complimentary tickets/admissions other than those mentioned above. Any person attending the Fall Preview Show that is not included in the student number, 6 director badges and 25 field passes, will need to purchase a ticket to enter the stadium. The ticket will provide all day stadium access (picnic NOT included but available for an additional price).

Bands will be encouraged to order picnic/dinner tickets in advance allowing parents and families to purchase any remaining tickets.
